RTW: She is the prom queen, I'm in the marching band

Each week, YA Highway hosts Road Trip Wednesday, a blog carnival in which YA Highwayers discuss a topic on their blogs and invite readers to do the same. This week's RTW topic is:

If your WIP or favorite book were music, what song(s) would it be?

What a perfect RTW question! In the beta version of PRODIGAL MAGGIE, the chorus of Girl Next Door by Saving Jane is included before the first chapter. If MAGGIE is ever published, I'd love to include it then, too, as it really captures Maggie's relationship with her sister.

You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift features a similar competitive relationship between two girls, however, it doesn't fit PRODIGAL MAGGIE because it is about a nerdy girl's love for a guy, while Maggie's story is about learning to accept herself - and her sister - for who they are.

Saving Jane - Girl Next Door

Small town homecoming queen
She's the star in this scene
There's no way to deny she's lovely
Perfect skin, perfect hair
Perfumed hearts everywhere
Tell myself that inside she's ugly
Maybe I'm just jealous
I can't help but hate her
Secretly I wonder if my boyfriend wants to date her

She is the prom queen I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader I'm sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk I'm sleeping on the floor
She's Miss America and I'm just the girl next door

Senior class president
She must be heaven sent
She was never the last one standing
A petite debutante
Everything that you want
Never to harsh or too demanding

Maybe I'll admit it
I'm a little bitter
Everybody loves her but I just wanna hit her

She is the prom queen I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader I'm sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk I'm sleeping on the floor
She's Miss America and I'm just the girl next door

Oh and I'm just the girl next door
I don't know why I'm feeling sorry for myself
I spend all my time wishing that I was someone else

She is the prom queen I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader I'm sitting in the stands
I get a little bit, she gets a little more
She's Miss America and... she's Miss America
I'm just the girl next door...

The chorus is awesome, and I love the line: "Secretly I wonder if my boyfriend wants to date her."

This is a perfect song for sisters in competition with each other. This also makes me want to read more about Prodigal Maggie. Sounds like a great book.

I'm not really a fan of Taylor Swift's. I just haven't listened to enough of her stuff. But the lyrics to that song are so sweet and so TRUE throughout so many times in my life. Makes me really want to red MAGGIE!

My manuscript's "theme song" (corny, I know) is "Hey, Soul Sista" by Train. I *wish* the song hadn't been played every 3 minutes all summer....and then all winter... I liked it alot more when I'd only heard it a few times. Nonetheless, it still feels like it belongs playing in the background of many, many of my ms's scenes.

Man, it would be so SO great for you if you are able to keep those lyrics when (not if, WHEN) MAGGIE gets published. They just fit SO perfectly with the relationship you set up.
