How many books can you read in a year?

One of my 2009 New Year's resolutions was to keep track of all the books I read this year and to read at least 3 books per month.

Who knows how many books I typically read in a year? Thirty-six is probably a good bit more than an average year. I was inspired by Guiliana Rancic (the E! television personality) who made it her resolution to read 3 books per month.

This is my list as of December 7, 2009. I will update it if necessary, but between finishing my book and the holidays, I'm not sure if I will have time for much more reading.

JANUARY -
World War Z by Max Brooks
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Pretties by Scott Westerfeld

FEBRUARY -
Specials by Scott Westerfeld
Eminem: The Way I Am by Eminem and Sacha Jenkins

MARCH -
Nothing

APRIL -
Sold by Patricia Mccormick
Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas

MAY -
The Anglophiles by Sarah Lyall
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling*

JUNE -
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by JK Rowling*
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by JK Rowling*
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling*

JULY -
Nothing

AUGUST -
Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

SEPTEMBER -
Inkspell by Cornelia Funke

OCTOBER -
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

NOVEMBER -
The Magician's Nephew by CS Lewis

DECEMBER -
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis

Obviously, I will not meet my goal this year. Bad March and July! No excuse for your poor - or rather, nonexistent - performance.

My resolution was not a wash, though. I read 20 books that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am going to renew my resolution for 2010, and maybe I will meet my goal next year.  I am itching to reread GONE WITH THE WIND for the millionth 10th(?) time, and the rich world of HARRY POTTER is calling my name. It's been too long, Harry!

Plus there are so many good books on my Christmas list!

Get ready, 2010!

I think I am going to start keeping a record of all the books I read too. I don't know that I can read 3 a month, because I am a slow reader and well, I struggle over, "do I want to knit or read...", haha. But I think it is a good idea to keep track of it for a year, just to see what I am reading.

Three books a month was very hard for me and I am a fast reader! But I also do that thing where I'll read a ton and then not read at all for a month or so, as you can tell from my list. :P

My favorite part of the resolution was definitely getting to look back and see what I read this year. Most years I'm not really sure and would have to peruse my bookshelf, but this year I have PROOF!

Well, since you are going to renew this resolution of 2010, I'll make a suggest to help out (^_^). I would recommend you check out something by Haruki Murakami. "Sputnik Sweetheart" was the first book I read by him. "Kafka on the Shore" and "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" are supposed good; planning on reading those once I finish "The Elephant Vanishes".

Hmmmm .... just writing this comment makes me realize the backlog of books that I need to read. Maybe I should do a similar resolution ... just not 3 books a month; I'm a slow reader.

I just started reading Narnia this year too! And HP of course. I have Uglies but I can't really get into it, the writing bugs me

It is my goal to finish the other 5(?) Narnia books this year! They are so short, maybe I can read them in one month. I actually liked The Magician's Nephew better than The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe!

My husband recently challenged me to read all 7 HP books in one week, ha ha. I know I can do it if I read round the clock, but I think for now I'd rather work on my book and save reading just for at night.

Scott Westerfeld's writing was interesting... he uses some very unique words over and over and it became a little distracting throughout the series. I enjoyed the story, though!
